Even Wall Street wants the Social Network
August 29, 2007
NEW YORK - Money Back Guarantee. It is this provocation launched by Spokeo, Internet service even born a month ago. Individuals who try the site for a week without being conquered are in fact regalati 5 U.S. dollars.
The bold move says two things: children who developed Spokeo are very sure of himself, for getting noticed in a very competitive you must use all the tricks of marketing. It could not be otherwise, after all, because the baby service does not act in any one area, but in the hottest of the moment: the so-called social networking, which identifies Web sites that allow users to create their own virtual personal spaces, of arricchirli photos, videos and blogs and, most importantly, to know other people.

Yahoo! defends himself: "we had to obey"
August 29, 2007
WASHINGTON - "We only respected the law. The latest version of the defensive line of Yahoo! in the case that sees accused of having helped local authorities to imprison two journalists and condemn Chinese dissidents call into question the obligation to obey the law of the place. This defence strategy is outlined in the response filed August 27 the District Court of Northern California, in response to requests for Human Rights USA, non-governmental associations which monitors respect for human rights by the United States. In April last year the organization had submitted to the Court, on behalf of journalists arrested and their families, a claim against Yahoo!.

Nokia N81 Slider Launched
August 29, 2007

Some sites have touted the new Nokia N81 to rival iPhone since there is a direct download function for its online music marketplace. The new Nokia N81 Slider launched today with great specs to boot.
With dedicated music and gaming keys, 3.5 mm headphone connector and 3G and WLAN connectivity, the Nokia N81 multimedia computer is a true mobile entertainment powerhouse. With a sleek, polished surface and keys that light up when you activate them, accessing content on the 3D multimedia menu is fast and intuitive. Equally impressive, the Nokia N81 is configured to find, buy, manage and play music and games purchased from the Music Store and Nokia N-Gage games service. The estimated retail price of the Nokia N81 is $ 360 before subsidies or taxes. The Nokia N81 8GB is expected to retail for 430 EUR before subsidies or taxes. Both versions are expected to begin shipping in the fourth quarter of 2007.
Nonetheless, I'm setting my eyes on the Nokia N82 as it has integrated GPS and a 5 megapixel camera with flash. Those specs are going to make me convert to a Nokia again since I'm still tied to my old Eten 600 PDA phone.

Second Life Literature
August 29, 2007
The mailing list of 'Association of Internet Researcher is a mine of information and interesting reflections.
Recently, someone asked a bibliography of reference on Second Life and, until now, have arrived the following records:
- Proceedings and audiocast of Second Life Education Workshop 2007;
- E-3: Virtual Worlds offered dall'Harvard Extension School (begins September
20082007); - Society and Information Technology in SL (vis-à-vis Manuel Castells'
research on the Network Society) offered by Penn State University (starts August 29!); - Emergent Forms of Life and the Anthropological Voice
by Michael MJ Fischer (Paperback - 31 Mar 2004);
- The blog Newfoundland;
- Second Life Annotated Bibliography.
I hope that it may be useful to those who, like the group Italian Bloggers Sindycate organized by Giuseppe Granieri, is reflecting on Second Life.
If I were a candidate who wants to make a thesis on Second Life I unirei this group and would follow at least some of the lessons of the courses reported in section 2 and 3.
A good intenditor…

The Erving Goffman plugin
August 28, 2007
During the past two weeks I read a lot, but wrote little.
While the belpaese was closed for vacation the rest of the world has continued to function more or less at full sfornando interviews, articles and post interesting.
Despite the logistical difficulties (I was in an area covered only by gprs) I managed to take note of things more interesting read in my space tumblr: F-notes.
The underlying theme is the idea of privacy proposed by social networks.
In a recent experiment, a company that handles security tried to create a fake profile and invite 200 randomly Facebook users as friends. 41% of those invited accepted the invitation to this by ensuring user access to their personal data available on your profile.
If a content posted on the Web is exposed to an audience indistinct, similar to that of mass communications, with social networks, however, talk back to (also) the social context and an audience, therefore, no more indistinct.
Having said this could seem a step backwards, a procedure most similar to that of the real world, but to look carefully things are particularly intricate.
Updating their status on Facebook means go to the public constituted by all his friends but write on the wall of a Facebook profile, for example, means conversation with that person in the presence of an audience made up of anyone who can have access to that profile, or friends of my friend. Some of these are friends in common, others do not. So conversations wall-to-wall maintain a degree of serendipity and vagueness dell'audicence.
Moving efficiently in a social network may require even more complex than those of a blog. About possederà these skills in the future will be benefited both in personal life as in that work. It is important, as a need to show clearly in this interview on CNET Henry Jenkins, included in curricula skills relating to new media literacy. It appears, at least in the United States (where 97% of teens have access to the Internet) is not so much the digital devide to worry as this "participation gap" (or the difference between those who know and knows how to use social media participating and not just enjoying culture and who does ago, even the Internet, use read-only).
So the question on the Internet is even more complex "simple" get media (or the learning of mass capacity to produce and publish content for the masses).
It speaks Danah Boyd from his experience to use Facebook and MySpace. It was truly free to refuse a request for "friendship" or there is a kind of unwritten rule that we must accept all? What happens when adults come in the context of young people and young? What does it mean for a teacher, be a friend of a student in Facebook?
In this sense the case of Facebook is exemplary because this social network has gone through progressive levels of openness (first Harvard, then the most important American University, then all American universities and finally the recent opening in all).
I can not help but wonder if Facebook will have the same passionate user base college next school year now that it's the hip adult thing. I do not honestly know. But so far, American social network sites have supported multiple social contexts tremendously well. Maybe the limited profile and privacy settings help, but I'm not so sure. Especially when profs are there to hang out with their friends, not just spy on their students. I'm wondering how prepared students are to see their profs' Walls filled with notes from their friends. Hmmm…
Very interesting, for this, the comparative study that Charlene Croft made between Facebook and MySpace.
Maybe he is right when Henry Jenkins highlights the potential that social media have to offer a space for collaboration intergenerational devoid of those constraints their real-world and, as a reader of the blog Danah Boyd:
(…) The real trend is the gradual loss of "context" - where people are less differentiated in their person between school, work, and social worlds. (…)
Posted by Nathan D | August 10, 2007 11:41 a.m. PM Posted on August 10, 2007 23:41
Or perhaps, as I wrote Jason Mittell in a comment to another bell'articolo: Ian Bogost - A Professor's Impressions of Facebook, we need platforms that can support, as happens in real life, different social contexts (Pulse, the social network of Plaxo implements something like that).
A sort of "plug-Erving Goffman."

The beard of the Prophet
August 21, 2007
We could call it the "B factor." Almost a constant from the history of revolutions and major religious movements: a beard. In the end, always a factor. Moses had, even Christ. Of Marx is known, not to mention Castro and Garibaldi. Maybe it gives you that charisma or perhaps is the charisma that makes it grow. The fact is that gives much to the fathers of their homeland, to national heroes, the prophets. Not by chance, Richard Stallman, class 1953, it has one; thick and incolta to come. After all, he is the acknowledged founder of the movement of free software (free software, in English), and if there is an intuition, apparently utopian and crazy, that is changing the world of computing is exactly that.
To understand the scope of the evidence can be a simple fact. If Microsoft has built an empire by preventing anyone to look within its codes, free software preaches the opposite: everyone should be able to freely open a free program, modify it and distribute it at will. Indeed, I am obliged to do so by the license. It seems senseless, but it works. Today most of servers, machines that manage the information systems of companies and websites, work with software of this type. The same goes for important pieces of applications Google that every day we use on the Internet, or programs like Firefox, a browser to surf the Net which is scardinando the monopoly of Internet Explorer.

Finalmente GnuCash anche per Windows
Agosto 7, 2007
