Technology to develop robots through the human brain activity
May 25, 2006
The Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International (ATR) and Honda Research Institute Japan Co.., Ltd.. ( "HRI") have developed the new man-machine interface "BMI" (Brain Machine Interface) for the development of robots through the signals of the human brain.
This new BMI technology has made it possible to decode the natural brain activity and to use data obtained to operate a robot in almost real time without any invasive intervention on the skull and brain.
This technological breakthrough offers greater opportunities for creating new types of interface between machines and the brain.
The idea of this BMI technology takes off from an article particularly appreciated devoted to decoding the content and subjective perception of the human brain written by Yukiyasu Kamitani, a scientist of ATR Computational Neuroscience Laboratories, and recently published the important scientific journal Nature Neuroscience .
Thanks to this study, Kamitani in collaboration with the scientist Frank Tong, was awarded the title of leader of research by the magazine Scientific American at Vanderbilt University as part of the 2005 edition of Scientific American 50, the prestigious annual list drawn up by magazine to highlight the studies worthy of note in the field of science and technology.
The research centre Japanese Honda and ATR have transformed the theory of this article in a system of decoding the brain and control of robots in real time.
From this research shows that the neural decoding based on MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) allows the hand of a mechanical robot to imitate the movements of Chinese blackberry ( "paper-rock-scissors") performed by the fingers of a person through the interpretation of haemodynamic responses of the brain. Although there is a delay of about 7 seconds between the movement of the subject and the mechanical movement of robots, researchers were able to obtain a decoding accuracy of 85%.
This technology could be applied to other types of non-invasive brain measurements, such as electric and magnetic fields of the brain and brain waves. It is expected that in future the use of such methods can provide response times faster devices with BMI more compact.
Procedures experimental technology recently developed BMI
Description of experimentation
With the help of an MRI scanner the person performing the movements "paper", "stone" or "scissors" of blackberry Chinese, while the answers haemodynamic associated with the subject's brain are monitored every second. The signals specific movements that generate paper-rock-scissors are extracted and decoded by a computer program and the data obtained are transferred to a mechanism-shaped robot that simulates hand movements performed by the original subject.
BMI
While the man-machine interfaces are based on traditional control switches operated by human hands and feet, the system BMI uses brain activity detected by various devices and allows control contactless terminals. In traditional systems are commonly used electrodes implanted and brain waves.
Features of the new BMI technology developed by ATR and HONDA
The system is intended for applications of technology BMI under normal situations of everyday life, without the need for surgery or intensive training.
1) are not required surgery
In conventional technology experiments conducted by BMI U.S. neuroscientists have been used invasive techniques, such as the installation of sets of electrodes. A possible spread of technology advanced non-invasive BMI would allow users to avoid the physical discomfort of surgery. The results of this trial demonstrate the opportunities offered by this interesting application.
2) is not required specific training
With technologies BMI conventional non-invasive, users must undergo intensive training to learn how to generate detectable brain activities. For example, since the brain activity associated with an intention, for example, "Yes", is not easily adjustable, the user must learn and perform a mental process that is irrelevant compared to the mental state but is associated with brain activity easily detectable such as mental calculation. You must learn to control their brain activity to express an intention. The new BMI technology is different because the natural brain activity associated with specific movements can be decoded without the use of alternative brain activity. The testing has revealed that the movements paper-rock-scissors were decoded in real time directly from the brain of a person not trained. This is an extraordinary technology in decoding the brain.
